چکیده

The backward Viterbi beam search has not received enough attentions other than being used in the second pass. The reason is that the speech recognition society has long ignored the concept of dynamic complexities of a speech recognition task which can help us to determine whether we should operate Viterbi decoding in forward or backward direction. We use the U.S. street address entry task as one example to show why the analysis of the dynamic task complexity information is important. We then describe the procedure to implement a backward Viterbi decoding system from an existing traditional ASR engine. We evaluated the backward Viterbi search using CMU’s PocketSphinx. The experimental results of the backward Viterbi Search show significant performance improvement over the forward Viterbi decoding system on the U.S. street address entry task.

Sparse Forward-Backward for Fast Training of Conditional Random Fields

Complex tasks in speech and language processing often include random variables with large state spaces, both in speech tasks that involve predicting words and phonemes, and in joint processing of pipelined systems, in which the state space can be the labeling of an entire sequence. In large state spaces, however, discriminative training can be expensive, because it often requires many calls to ...

Dynamic Programming for NLP

The strategy of dynamic programming reduces the complexity of a search problem which decomposes into frequently-reused instances of the same problem. You encountered dynamic programming for n-gram segmentation in HW4. We have also discussed two more dynamic programming algorithms in lecture: Viterbi and forward-backward. For HW5, you will need to implement the Viterbi algorithm. The forward-bac...

A detection approach to search-space reduction for HMM state alignment in speaker verification

To support speaker verification (SV) in portable devices and in telephone servers with millions of users, a fast algorithm for hidden Markov model (HMM) alignment is necessary. Currently, the most popular algorithm is the Viterbi algorithm with beam search to reduce search-space; however, it is difficult to determine a suitable beam width beforehand. A small beam width may miss the optimal path...

Dynamic Programming-based Search Algorithms in NLP

Dynamic Programming (DP) is an important class of algorithms widely used in many areas of speech and language processing. It provides efficient solutions to seemingly intractable inference over exponentially-large spaces by sharing overlapping subproblems. Well-known examples of DP in our field include Viterbi and Forward-Backward Algorithms for finitestate models, CKY and Earley Algorithms for...

KL-Divergence Guided Two-Beam Viterbi Algorithm on Factorial HMMs

This thesis addresses the problem of the high computation complexity issue that arises when decoding hidden Markov models (HMMs) with a large number of states. A novel approach, the two-beam Viterbi, with an extra forward beam, for decoding HMMs is implemented on a system that uses factorial HMM to simultaneously recognize a pair of isolated digits on one audio channel. The two-beam Viterbi alg...
